BlueEdge Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information BlueEdge collects, why it is used, when it is shared, and the controls available to you when you use the BlueEdge website, iPhone app, and related services.

Information we collect

Account information

When you use Sign in with Apple, we receive Apple's account-specific user identifier. We may also receive your name and email address if you choose to share them. Apple may provide a private relay email address instead of your personal email address.

Subscription and access information

We store the App Store product, transaction identifiers, subscription status and dates, preferred departure inlet, trial eligibility and status, and complimentary-access status needed to provide and restore access. Apple processes payment credentials; BlueEdge does not receive your full payment-card details.

Trial eligibility and fraud prevention

When you request a free trial, the app asks Apple DeviceCheck for a temporary device token. We send that token to Apple to read and set a limited trial-used state for this app and device. BlueEdge does not store the token or a hardware identifier. We also store a keyed, nonreversible value derived from your account identity to record that the identity claimed a trial. These checks help prevent repeat trials after reinstalling the app, creating another BlueEdge account, or deleting an account.

Planned trips and notifications

When you explicitly save a planned trip, we store the selected departure inlet, destination name and coordinates, planned start and end times, and whether you enabled trip alerts. If alerts are enabled, the app also sends an Apple Push Notification service token and a random app-installation identifier. These values are linked to your account only to maintain the saved plan and deliver the requested marine-hazard or elevated weather warning. They are not hardware or advertising identifiers and are not used to track you across apps or services.

Location

The iPhone app requests permission to use precise location while it is open so BlueEdge can rank nearby departure inlets. After a trial, paid membership, or complimentary access is active, location also supports vessel position, speed, course, range, and bearing. The map and GPS controls are not available before access is active. Vessel calculations are performed on your device. BlueEdge sends the visible map bounds or selected map point to its data service to return the requested ocean, seafloor, tide, buoy, or weather information. The service rounds request coordinates and can retain requested areas in a bounded shared data cache so equivalent requests can reuse validated results. Requests are authorized to your account while processed, but BlueEdge does not use this cache to create a continuous vessel-location history or display one in your account. If you center the map on your vessel, the requested map area may approximate your location. A destination coordinate is retained in your account only when you explicitly save a planned trip. The map provider also receives requests for the tiles shown on screen and standard network information, such as an IP address, and may infer the general map area being viewed.

Technical information

Our hosting and security providers may process request timestamps, IP addresses, response status, and limited device or browser information to deliver the service, prevent abuse, investigate errors, and protect accounts. BlueEdge does not use advertising identifiers or third-party advertising trackers.

Product feedback

When you choose to send feedback in the iPhone app, we store your message, feedback category, optional rating, app version and build, iOS version, locale, and the app screen from which the form was opened. Feedback is linked to your BlueEdge account so we can prevent abuse, investigate a report, and delete the original submission with your account. Do not include passwords, payment details, or sensitive location history in a feedback message.

How we use information

  • Authenticate accounts and maintain secure sessions.
  • Apply the 3-day trial and subscription rules for supported U.S. coastal data.
  • Validate purchases, restore access, and respond to App Store subscription events.
  • Deliver ocean forecasts, map content, offline trip packages, and support.
  • Maintain a saved planned trip and deliver requested marine-hazard or weather alerts.
  • Analyze voluntary product feedback and identify recurring bugs, requests, and data-quality concerns.
  • Protect the service, diagnose failures, and meet legal obligations.

When information is shared

We share information only as needed with providers that operate BlueEdge, including Apple for authentication, DeviceCheck, subscriptions, and push notifications, infrastructure providers for hosting and security, and map or marine-data providers for requested content. We may also disclose information when required by law or to protect users and the service. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-company behavioral advertising.

BlueEdge periodically sends unreviewed feedback text and its limited app context to OpenAI's API to identify recurring themes. Requests are configured not to store generated responses, although OpenAI may retain limited safety or abuse-monitoring data under its API data controls. When a theme needs attention, BlueEdge emails its owner through Amazon Web Services with a paraphrased pattern, recommended next steps, report count, and an aggregate review marker. That email does not contain the original feedback message, per-feedback record identifiers, your account identifier, email address, device proof, or location.

Map content is currently supplied by Esri and its contributors. Their handling of network requests is governed by the Esri Privacy Statement. Apple's handling of Sign in with Apple and App Store purchases is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy. OpenAI's handling of API data is described in its API data controls.

Retention and deletion

Account information is retained while your account is active. Secure app sessions expire after a limited period. We retain subscription records and limited security records only as long as needed to restore purchases, prevent fraud, operate the service, or satisfy legal obligations. For a prior trial or a subscription that survives account deletion, this includes a keyed, nonreversible identity-continuity value so a repeat trial or another person's purchase claim can be prevented; we do not retain the raw Sign in with Apple identifier for that purpose. Apple separately maintains the limited DeviceCheck state under its privacy policy. A saved planned trip remains until you replace or delete it or delete your account. The app requests removal of its push registration when you turn alerts off, delete the plan, or sign out. BlueEdge also disables a token Apple rejects and deletes registrations with the account. Offline trip packages remain on your device until you remove them or delete the app.

Original product-feedback submissions are deleted with your BlueEdge account. De-identified AI review summaries and resulting product-work records may be retained after the original submission is deleted so BlueEdge can track recurring issues and prior product decisions.

You can delete your BlueEdge account from Membership, or from Access & Departure after access is active, in the iPhone app. This deletes account-linked data that we are not legally required to retain and revokes the Sign in with Apple token. Deleting a BlueEdge account does not cancel billing managed by Apple; cancel an active subscription separately in Apple's subscription settings.

Your choices

  • Use Apple's private email relay when it is offered during sign-in.
  • Decline or revoke location access in iOS Settings; nearby inlet ranking and vessel telemetry will be unavailable. After access is active, you can still browse the map manually.
  • Turn off trip alerts, remove the saved plan, or revoke notification permission in iOS Settings.
  • Sign out, restore purchases, manage your Apple subscription, or delete your account in the app.

Children

BlueEdge is intended for a general boating and fishing audience and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Security

We use technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including encrypted transport, encrypted credential storage, short-lived authorization artifacts, and server-side verification of Apple identity and purchase signatures. No system can be guaranteed completely secure.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy as BlueEdge changes. The effective date above identifies the current version. Questions or privacy requests can be sent to privacy@blue-edge.us.
